In another little peek at upcoming 2021 creatures, I wanted to share the progress on the Fish Dragons we’ve been working on for MerMay this year. Those of you who have been with the Club for a while remember these concept sketches I shared earlier in the year:

These three little Dragonfish are all designs I want to have available in limited quantities throughout the month of May! Because reading my handwriting is hard, they are a Betta Fish Dragon, a Leafy Sea Dragon, and a Goldfish Dragon. My concept sketches are pretty rough, and the finished designs will look more realistic and detailed than this for sure! The plan is to have all three of these fishies soft-bodied with a wire armature and resin faces/feet/fins/tails. I still have a long way to go before these guys are fully realized, but so far I’ve started blocking out the Betta and the Goldfish:

As many of you know, I like to fully sculpt my creatures in Monster Clay before making a fabric body pattern for the soft parts. Then I go on to refine the parts meant to be cast in resin, and add all the details before chopping up the doll and making molds!

The goal is to have prototypes of these designs finished and photographed by early April so we can do some actual marketing ahead of the event in May.
